On the evening of Friday 3rd July, Kate Bowsher Dog Training held a double Gold Scentops trial at a new venue - Folly Farm in Sulhamstead.
Judges Vanessa Bonner & Eve Silveston-Maxey
The first Gold trial was held outdoors on the farm. The search area was full of distractions, including a muck heap, cows in the next field, birds and lots of distracting smells. There were 2 hides in the first search area. One was higher up underneath a piece of orange farm machinery. The second was at a very awkward angle on the edge of a hay bale by a wall on the right of the search area. The weather was warm and there was a light breeze.
The teams all approached the search differently, and most had really nice search plans. Only 2 teams found both hides. The hide that tripped most people up was the hay bale, as it was only accessible from one side. We did have our first incident of poop-gate in this search.
The second gold trial area was also outdoors on the farm. It was a big area with parked trailers, lots of bails of hay, old water troughs and other farm items to search. There were also areas teams had to avoid so it was important search plans were well thought through.
It started off with warm weather and a light breeze but as the sun set the wind really picked up.
In this search there were 3 hides. The first was at the front of the search area in a brick wall. Some teams picked this up immediately whilst others went passed and worked back to it later, others missed it all together.
The second hide was in a blue pipe and was at an awkward low angle. The majority of dogs located this, and there were some fabulous examples of dogs working in odour to source.
The final hide was at the front of the big green trailer higher up tucked under a bunch of thick cables. Some dogs located this easily, others not at all, and some picked up the odour from underneath the trailer at the opposite end with the wind blowing. There were a few teams who called the area clear after 2 hides. We also had another poop-gate incident.
Overall, some fantastic searching and great examples of supportive handling.
It was a joy to watch all teams!
