York Mantrailing and Scent Detection

24/10/2026 Osbaldwick and Murton Scout hut

York Mantrailing and Scent Detection held a Bronze Scent Ops trial at a scout hut in Osbaldwick near York. The search area included the inside of the main hut as well as a corridor which leads to the toilets and kitchen. There were several doors leading off from the search area which remained closed. Within the search area there was an array of benches, chairs, tables and traffic cones. As well as some larger objects in the corners of the room, such as a fridge and a folding table tennis table.

The first hide was located under a table in the main area. The second hide was located under a cone at the end of the corridor. The weather outside was windy and wet and some of the dogs showed interest in both internal and external doorways.

None of the dogs located both hides but most recognised the odour, even if they weren't able to pinpoint and indicate clearly. Overall there were some very positive points from all of the searches: some great handling skills, some lovely methodical searching and some very hard working dogs 🙂
