Trials Report:

On friday 17th July KBDT hosted a Double Bronze and Double silver scentops trials at Newbury Christmas Tree Farm in Bagnor.

Luckily we had lots of cloud coverage and a lovely strong breeze so all dogs and handlers were comfortable and safe in the weather conditions.

We were pleased to welcome new teams to ScentOps tonight as they competed in their first ever trials!  We had a tale of two halves with the Bronze searches.

The first Bronze search area was in a shaded corner of a fielded area with tall trees a picnic bench and a shed. The team were asked to complete a perimeter search and to search the trees bench and shed. The first hide was located on the corner of the shed and most dogs worked the odour into source nicely here where they caught it in the breeze. The second was just on the underside of the top of the picnic bench.

All teams demonstrated lovely searches and some superb handling! The environment was challenging for some of the dogs but everyone did a fantastic job.

The second Bronze search area was to search through a section of the farm, fully shaded with a number of obstacles/ artefacts to work through including bags, stacks of wood, palettes and pipes. Some of the teams found the environment tricky with lots of distractions and others demonstrated effective and efficient searching.

Everyone did brilliantly and it was lovely to see both dog and handlers build on throttle condition throughout the evening.

The first Silver Trial this evening was warm with a lovely breeze amongst the Christmas Trees. Both hides were environmentally challenging due to local wildlife bugs and insects. All competitors and teams did well. Search patterns were great despite having to navigate the volume of trees / obstacles. Some handlers did worry about search patterns. We did have one unfortunate elimination.

All teams coped well with the environment and the handlers complemented the dogs and vice versa (styles, environmental awareness etc).

The second silver trial was a smaller area but the hides were more complicated. One hide was in a tree stump lower down and the other was suspended in a Christmas tree. The search pattern was more difficult to get right but everyone did really well. Some high scores were achieved here!
