Trial Reports

BRONZE 1

The first Bronze search took place inside St. Mary’s Church in Beenham, providing a lovely cool environment. The hides proved a bit of a challenge for some teams, with the first hide around the raised altar area and the second tucked away at the end of a small corridor. Most dogs picked up odour around the first hide, although there were a couple of false calls in the surrounding area, while the second hide proved challenging for some, with only a few teams successfully locating it. Some dogs were clearly in odour but were moved on before they had fully worked it through, or gave only a very brief indication that was missed by the handler. There was some lovely area coverage throughout, with really nice teamwork and relationships between the dogs and their handlers. The teams worked hard in a challenging environment, and only one team successfully found both hides, so those who located even one hide should be very pleased with their searches.

BRONZE 2

The second Bronze search area was outdoors. It was warm with a gentle breeze. This was a perimeter search of part of the church as well as a search if the path around the outside. The first hide was located within a pile of wooden beams. The second was located in a metal wire plate cover on the outside od the church building.

There was some really nice demonstrations of handling here. Good area plans resulted in efficiency and effective searching from teams with some high scores and most dogs finding both hides. There were so excellent examples of working an odour into source from all competitors.

SILVER 1

The first silver search was inside of the church. This is a big open building with thick brick walls and tiled floors so generally a cold search area. This was a perimeter search of the inside of the main room of the church. They were a number of artefacts (chairs, tables, stairs) to search in this area. There were some outstanding performances from teams in this search, with only 6 points in it from 1st to 5th place with some exceptionally high scores. The first hide was under a table along the back permits and the second was under a chair which was amongst a chair stack in a busier part of the search area. Well done to all teams competing in this.

SILVER 2

The second silver search area was a challenging search straight down the middle of the church from one end to the other. This included the aisle with all pews off of the aisle and also included a room at both the top and bottom of the aisle.

The first hide was in the room at the bottom of the aisle located underneath some stairs on a stack of boxes. All dogs recognised there eas odour here but some found the search environment overstimulating and only some dogs committed to the find.  The second hide was on the end of one of the pews on the right hand side towards the top of the aisle under a book. Only 2 of the 5 teams found this hide, though some dogs did knock the odour but perhaps were confident enough in the environment to commit to working it into source.

Overall this was a great day. Thanks to all of the competitor teams who joined us for the trials!
