Silver 2:

The search area for this silver trial includes both outdoor and indoor areas. The front side of a block of a building with the roller shutters opened up, a small area of concrete and 2 smallish rooms inside, one much busier than the other (see pics). Competitors could start wherever they liked along the front of the concrete, and many chose to go directly indoors, then return to outside later. One hide was located just next to the right hand entrance, hidden in some artificial grass. Many started here, some dogs indicated immediately, others proceeded to the rest of their search but found it at the back end of their time when returning to the area. The second hide was in the crevice of an empty butchers box, within a stack of boxes. Nearly all dogs picked up this odour as they moved from one room to another, and worked it in to source well (despite one dog having to deal with a very large spider distraction! Handlers did well to guide their dogs through the multiple sections of this search and the teamwork scores were extremely high throughout. Over all a lovely show of skills and teamwork for silver today. Well done everyone.

Gold:

Our gold area this evening was a real environmental challenge. An area of stubble field, with various farm machinery and bale stacks. Judges included the ground area between the object into the search also. Handlers were initially daunted by the size of the area, which caused some to search faster than they normally would, and move dogs on quicker than maybe necessary, but ample time to complete the search meant many then returned to objects they hadn’t searched thoroughly to start. Generally all did very well to cover the area including the ground, and all teams found both hides: one early in the area under the corner of a stack of bales and one tucked into the edge of a storage box on a trailer. Both were placed so that dogs would pick up odour on a slight breeze and be able to work the odour from anywhere in the search area. All teams found the bale hide with relative ease, a handful of dogs struggled slightly with the trailer if they were not naturally high searchers. We were extremely impressed with all teams, the level of handler-dog communication was 1st class throughout
