This trial took part in the Office of GB Total Equestrian. The hide was located on the corner of cabinet. All dogs located the area the hide was in but not all managed to locate it to its source. We had some very nice indications from those dogs that found and the dogs did a very nice job of ignoring the distractions the office provided. Well done to all handlers for some fantastic handling!

The second of our club trials this evening had a small but challenging area. A small store room used for boots/shoes/hats with racking all the way around the outsides and stocked boxes in the middle. The hide was located at the back of the area on the end of a shoebox at nose height for all competing dogs. Handlers had to be mindful not to get in the dog’s way when moving around the area particularly those with bigger dogs or on-line. All teams did a great job of clearing all the boxes and handlers did well to work the corners and more challenging spots. Every dog clearly identified their odour, and indications were clear and solid. Overall an impressive group of handlers and dogs with lots of potential for higher levels.

This trial was held in part of the Equestrian shop, some dogs found this very challenging as the shop provides lots of exciting smells. Handlers did a good job of supporting their dogs and working through this whilst maintaining their search pattern.
The hides were located in a bucket of sponges and on a shelving unit. A mixed bag on the success rate of dogs finding both hides. Some handlers didn’t trust their dogs when working in the hide in the bucket of sponges , believing their dogs were “shopping” rather than working in the hide.
Overall though some lovely team work and searches!

The second bronze area of the evening was a section within an equestrian feed warehouse. It comprised of 5 rows of pallets stacked with bags of feed and bedding in varying quantities, with the bags at varying heights. the alleys between the rows were 1-2m wide. Handlers could start anywhere within the area as time started on first task, with all except one starting at the closest left hand point. The first hide was located on a set of steps at the end of the first alley, and half the dogs did not locate this first time around the area. Many picked up odour to the right of the steps on a pallet, which encouraged handlers to explore the pallet further rather than the end of the alley. With quite a large area to search, some handlers rushed the first alley, and didn’t reach the steps at all before turning back and moving onto the rest of the area. Most did cover the area twice and most did find this hide on a more thorough search and gave some perfect indications.
The second hide was at the other end of the search area between two bags of feed around 30cm off the floor. Many dogs picked up this odour on the adjacent pallet, and couldn’t work the odour back to source behind them. Those that did find this hide were tasked by handlers or searched both sides of the alleyway independently. Again those that found gave lovely solid indications. Overall great area coverage and search patterns from all the teams. It was really nice to see handlers giving lots of feedback to their dogs and really working together on this search, especially as for many this was their 4th search of the night and fatigue had very clearly started to set in. Excellent work all round.
